It's of debatable utility - a catapult system probably would've been the better bet - but it's undeniably cool to look at, and makes for a wonderful place to display the ship's name and crest.

I agree the RN would have been better served with Catapult. High launch weight for the aircraft. IIRC the original plants were to have the new EMALS catapult from the Ford class installed.
